Martinsville NASCAR weather: Will rain Friday force a Friday night qualifying?

Rain is in the forecast for most of the day Friday at Martsinville Speedway but could exit and clear out by evening. Would NASCAR qualify at night?

The wettest day, so far, during the 2017 NASCAR season looks to be Friday at Martinsville Speedway. Haven’t had much weather this season outside of the rain for the Clash at Daytona and the heat in Phoenix.

Weak weather system will pass through the region with a cold front moving through Friday afternoon and evening. I am expecting some rain showers through the first half of the days with areas of scattered to broken showers and storms during the afternoon. How will this impact race activity at Martinsville? The first practice could be wet but the rest of the afternoon is iffy but not impossible.

When dealing with scattered to broken areas of rain and storms, that means there is dry space and possible dry time. I’d give the odds of practice between noon and 4 about 40 percent likelihood. While not very optimistic, it’s not impossible.

As for qualifying later in the afternoon, a few showers and storms could be around but it’s possible especially if they wanted to try later that evening. I expect rain and storms to be moving out between 5 and 7 p.m. It is possible if there is a delay in the 4:30 Cup series qualifying they could do it later that evening.

The rest of the weekend at Martinsville Speedway is nice and dry. Plenty of sunshine with pleasant temperatures near 70. The only thing is possible 10 to 15 mph winds on Saturday.
