Kyle Larson had a nearly perfect day on the track last Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, as he started on the pole, led the most laps, and won his second-career Monster Energy Cup Series race. But it was following the Auto Club 400 where his good day took a different turn.

Larson was leaving the Southern California track when was involved in a traffic accident with another motorist, who according to Larson ran a red light and collided with Larson’s Chevrolet Suburban. Everyone involved was uninjured.

“It is a funny story,” Larson said Friday at Martinsville Speedway. “Just the irony of it, I guess, having a near perfect weekend and a quarter-mile from the track to get in a car accident.”

Larson’s rented SUV was struck in the left front, causing the hood to buckle and knocking the alignment out of skew. Despite the damage, he was able to continue to drive the vehicle to the airport without further incident. As for the man who ran caused the accident, Larson said his truck sustained considerable damage.

“I think the person that we hit, he was one of the actual like traffic coordinators, like setting cones out and stuff,” Larson said. “And I don’t think he realized that they picked the cones up from the side where we were coming from. I don’t think he expected anybody to be coming from where we were and he just darted out in the intersection.”

Larson said the other motorist didn’t know that he had struck the winner of that afternoon’s race, but the police officers who showed up recognized the 24-year-old, who has one win and three second-place finishes in five Cup Series races this season.

“Yeah, so that was cool,” Larson said. “They were quick about it, too.”
