NASCAR Martinsville 2017 qualifying results: Rainout puts Kyle Larson on STP 500 pole

Rain washed out qualifying Friday, forcing officials to set the field by points for Sunday’s Monster Energy Cup Series race.

A week ago, Kyle Larson won the pole based off speed, but on Friday the Chip Ganassi Racing driver was rewarded for his season-long performance. Inclement weather forced NASCAR to use owner points to set the starting lineup for Sunday’s STP 500.

Larson is the Monster Energy Cup Series points leader, having finished second or better in four of five races this season. Chase Elliott will start alongside Larson on the front row, with Martin Truex Jr. third, Brad Keselowski fourth, and Joey Logano fifth.

Rain hampered on-track activities Friday morning, delaying Cup Series practice by 30 minutes. A second band of severe weather brought heavy rain and lightning over the half-mile track, shortly after the conclusion of the one-hour session that saw Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch post the fastest single-lap speed. Larson was third.

All 38 drivers entered will start Sunday’s STP 500, the first short track race of the season.
