Seven-time championship-winning crew chief Chad Knaus had his laptop, which contained all his notes for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race, stolen from his rental car Wednesday night, according to The Associated Press.

Knaus and his wife flew into San Francisco Wednesday night, then drove their rental car to Fisherman’s Wharf to have dinner. When the couple returned to the car after dinner, the right-side rear passenger window was smashed and two briefcases containing their laptops and cash were missing. Their luggage was not stolen.

On Knaus’ laptop were files and notes pertaining only to Sonoma Raceway, just north of San Francisco and site of Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350. Knaus is the longtime crew chief for Jimmie Johnson and the have won a record-tying seven Cup championships, including last year’s title.

Hendrick Motorsports had encrypted the laptop so any proprietary data is protected. And because the files had been shared with other members of the No. 48 team, Knaus was able to access the information related to Sunday’s race.

”Unless you are in motorsports, you aren’t going to care too much about the information,” Knaus told the AP.
