Erik Jones made Kyle Busch work for it, but when the Bass Pro Shops/NRA Night Race concluded Busch simply was too good and able to hold on to win Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Kyle Busch completes sweep, wins Cup Series race Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch’s victory capped a sweep of the Monster Energy Cup Series, Xfinity Series (Friday) and Camping World Truck Series (Wednesday) races at the half-mile Tennessee track. He is the only driver to win all three NASCAR national touring races over a week span at a single track, and also accomplished the feat in 2010 at Bristol.
Busch celebrated his sweep by parking his No. 18 Toyota on the frontstretch where he then climbed atop his car’s roof with a broom. He also pointed toward the crowd, many of whom were booing, while holding three fingers in the air.
“Man, Erik Jones put up a whale of a fight,” Busch said. “That all I had. I was running with my tongue hanging. My arms were Jell-O and my throat hurts, but man that’s awesome.”
Busch passed Jones with 55 laps remaining then used determined driving and lapped traffic to fend off the 21-year-old rookie. Jones, who started on the pole and led a race-high 260 laps of a possible 500, finished a career-best second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, and Kurt Busch.
The win was Kyle Busch’s 40th-career premier division win and second of the 2017 season. He moved to second place in the Cup points standings with two regular season races remaining.
“Car might not have been perfect, but I’m never perfect,” Busch said. “I never feel like we’re perfect. So proud of these guys, so proud of my team, so proud of Joe Gibbs Racing.”
Despite posting a career-best result, Jones couldn’t help but lament what could’ve been. A win would’ve locked him into the 16-driver playoffs. He will need to win one of two remaining regular season races to qualify, either at Darlington Raceway (Sept. 3) or Richmond Raceway (Sept. 9).
“You don’t want to sound like you’re whining or being a sore loser by saying it sucks to run second, but it’s a bummer. It hurts,” Jones said. “This was the first shot that I really had to come really close to it in the Cup Series. It’s Kyle Busch. He won all three races here this weekend.”
Ryan Newman, Trevor Bayne, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson, and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top 10.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. labored through a long night in his final Cup start at Bristol, one of his favorite tracks. The 14-time most popular driver, who’s retiring from full-time competition at the end of the season, finished a nondescript 23rd.
“We struggled,” Earnhardt said. “We had a real fast car for like 10-15 laps and then we would just [get] real, real tight, so we struggled all day trying to figure it out. We weren’t good and we weren’t going to fix it on pit road either.”
