Dale Earnhardt Jr. will carry a familiar paint scheme in his final Monster Energy Cup Series race, featuring a design that harkens back to when he first debuted in NASCAR’s premier division.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. unveils paint scheme for final Cup Series race
The design Dale Earnhardt Jr. will have on the No. 88 car in his final Cup Series start mirrors the paint scheme he had upon debuting in NASCAR’s top division.

The bright red base with a black roof and distinct black lines running the length of the car mirrors the popular Budweiser-sponsored paint scheme Earnhardt raced when he made his first Cup Series start in 1999, and then raced full time the following season for the team founded his father, Dale Earnhardt Inc.
The commemorative design featuring Earnhardt Jr.’s current sponsor, Axalta, was unveiled during a live one-hour special Tuesday night on QVC. To ensure authenticity and that the shades of red were exact, artist Sam Bass spoke with crew members who worked at DEI and helped in retrieving paint codes.
Earnhardt, NASCAR’s 14-time most popular driver, announced in April he would retire from full-time competition at the end of the current season. The 42-year-old still plans to compete in a handful of Xfinity Series races, but his last scheduled Cup Series race is the 2017 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 19.
