NBA Draft Rumors: Austin Rivers Reportedly Has A Lottery Promise

The 2012 NBA Draft is still three weeks away, but the promise rings are going out! Dion Waiters, the Syracuse guard, was the first prospect to reportedly earn a promise from a team picking in the lottery (ignoring Anthony Davis’s unspoken No. 1 overall promise); Waiters left the draft combine early. According to the excellent Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, fellow two-guard Austin Rivers will do the same.

One NBA assistant coach said he was surprised Austin Rivers didn’t work out at the NBA’s predraft combine here Thursday. The East scout expects Rivers to be selected in the Nos. 10-20 range, but an NBA source told Yahoo! Sports that Rivers has a promise late in the draft lottery.

Teams looking for two-guards in the late lottery include the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns. There is expected to be a nice chunk of trade action this year as well, which will open up more possibilities.

Rivers spent one season at Duke before turning pro. His father is Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers. The Spears piece has great background on their relationship and Doc’s coaching of Austin through the draft process.
