Are The Kings Holding Up A Rockets Dwight Howard Trade?

Credit Houston GM Daryl Morey for his ambition, but as the Rockets try to position themselves for a Dwight Howard trade, the Sacramento Kings may not play along with Morey’s master plan. After the Rockets acquired an additional first round pick from the Timberwolves Tuesday, there were reports that they would then offer two of their first round picks plus Kyle Lowry to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for the No. 5 pick and Tyreke Evans.

This would allow the Rockets to then offer the Orlando Magic a package of Evans, Kevin Martin and the No. 5 and 18 picks to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Dwight Howard. All in all, that would be a pretty tremendous haul for the Magic. The problem is the Kings.

TNT’s David Aldridge reports that there is “no way” Sacramento would do the deal that the Rockets were rumored to be offering. Whether Houston ever even offered the deal remains speculation, but at least for now, Sacramento’s answer is clear. And that leaves Houston in limbo.

The Rockets have stockpiled assets -- three first round picks, plus Kyle Lowry and his very attractive contract, and even including Kevin Martin. Now the question is whether they can turn those assets into Dwight Howard or any other superstar before draft day arrives Thursday. It’s still early, and Sacramento’s not the only team willing to deal before the draft, they were just the most attractive option.

For now, we know this much: Nobody will work harder than Daryl Morey to try and pull a miracle here, but with Sacramento’s apparent refusal to deal, it won’t be as easy as some thought.
