Flip Saunders was none too pleased when he found out that Gilbert Arenas lied to him about a phantom knee injury Tuesday night. While Arenas’ intentions were good, in wanting to give young teammate Nick Young more playing time, the gesture was not well-received by his head coach.
Arenas, Saunders Comment On Gilbert’s Fake Knee Injury
I told him I’m more disappointed personally because I believed in you. And there’s a trust factor. I told him that you have to be honest with me about all things. It’s just like dealing with your kids. Your kids make mistakes, and you deal with but it doesn’t mean you love them any less. You deal with the mistake and you move on.
For his part, Arenas was contrite and wishes he would have handled the situation differently. When asked if there was a better way to go about it, he was clear.
In hindsight now I would say yes. I wasn’t thinking this would be another media outburst. Everything that I do now is someone tit for tat trying to blow it out of proportion. Y’now at the end of the day Nick is happy. He got to play, got to show that he can play. And I’m out here taking all the heat again.
If I wouldn’t of made any comments, you guys wouldn’t have known. Let’s just say I blew it. It’s like you guys want somebody honest but you don’t want somebody honest. I screwed up again. I practice, I play hard.
