On Friday night, the Celtics’ Rajon Rondo recorded an incredible 24 assists against the Knicks, and given that the Celtics won 105-101, it seems that they needed every one of them. A few statistical nuggets:
How Do Rajon Rondo’s 24 Assists Stack Up Against The Record Books?
- Rondo’s 24 assists were the most from a Celtic in a single game since Bob Cousy racked up 28 in 1959. (This article previously stated that Rondo set a franchise record. See comments.)
- The NBA record is held by Scott Skiles. Nearly 20 years ago, Skiles put up 30 assists for the Magic. Nobody has put up more than 24 in a game since 1996.
- While Rondo put up 24 assists, he only scored 10 points himself, which is quite unusual. Of the seven times a player has put up more than 24 assists, all of them scored at least 17 points, and most of them scored 20 or more. These numbers suggest some especially un-selfish play.
- There was a period of nearly ten minutes, stretching from the end of the first quarter through much of the second, in which Rondo didn’t record a single assist. Many of them came in bunches.
