The New York Knicks Win The Stats, Lose The Game

Last night, the New York Knicks lost to the Denver Nuggets 120-118, their sixth straight loss. They never held a lead at any point in the game, and only made it close with a late run in the fourth quarter. So, you could say the game was not as close as the score indicated.

↵But then, you look at the stats, and ... well, the Knicks look a lot better. As ESPN Stats and Info notes, they won pretty much every category.

↵↵The New York Knicks did everything in their statistical power to beat the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. They made more 3-pointers. They had more rebounds. They had more assists. They had fewer turnovers. And they had more blocked shots.

↵

↵

And yet, they lost. The last time a team won all those statistical categories without winning a game was in 2006, when the Cavaliers did in an eight-point loss to Toronto. So what was the difference? Free throws. The Nuggets made 31 of them; the Knicks made just 23. That's the logical explanation for why the Knicks lost.

↵Or, we could say the Knicks are full of players that put up numbers, but don’t win. Forget factuality, let’s go with that.
