VIDEO: Nuggets’ J.R. Smith Tries To Fly, Settles For Dunk Of The Year

There aren't too many players who pull off better in-game dunks than the Nuggets' J.R. Smith, but he topped all of those plays last night against the San Antonio Spurs. With the first quarter winding down, Smith crossed over on Ime Udoka and ... well, you can see the rest for yourself. Poor Gary Neal had no idea what was coming.

We knew Smith was an athletic freak, but we had no idea he was capable of doing something like that. To review: Smith took off from just inside the free-throw line, managed to jump over Neal while avoiding the charge (Neal’s foot was in the restricted area) and still was able to dunk it with two hands. You might as well hand Smith the dunk contest crown right now.

Screenshots and other random things about this play below the jump:

First thing’s first: look at where Smith started his jump:

That’s just inside the free-throw line, and too early for Neal to slide over and pick up the charge. Oh, he tried, but he was just a fraction of a second late, and now, he’ll be in a poster falling over for the rest of eternity.

Everyone in the building was impressed, as they should have been. It was an unbelievable dunk. The only guy who didn't seem all that enthused was Carmelo Anthony, who didn't even smile or cheer for some reason. Instead, he did this. (via @JohnCTownsend)

I guess he felt like that dunk would look cooler in New York.
