LeBron James’ ‘LeChicken’ Cover Art: A Thorough And Much-Needed Deconstruction

Friday's issue of the New York Post featured a particularly curious photograph. The subject: LeBron James, the guy who chose to go to one of the 29 NBA teams who are not the Knicks, and is taking them on in Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

This image makes many assertions and raises many questions:

  • James’ first name is not “LeCHICKEN.” It is LeBron.
  • This image is obviously Photoshopped.
  • Did the editors at the New York Post come up with “LeCHICKEN” in response to the photo, or did they Photoshop the image in response to “LeCHICKEN?” Which came first, the chicken nickname or the chicken Photoshop?
  • Is the New York Post asserting that LeBron is actually a chicken? This assertion is easily refutable after consulting websites such as Wikipedia.com.
  • Perhaps the Post is insinuating that LeBron demonstrates chicken-like qualities.
  • Do they mean to apply that LeBron eats corn feed, or that he lays eggs?
  • In contemporary culture, chickens are associated with cowardice for reasons unclear. It follows, then, that the Post means to indirectly associate LeBron with cowardice.
  • Why did they bother with “LeCHICKEN”? It doesn’t rhyme with “LeBron” or form any sort of reference. Why didn’t they just call him, “CHICKEN”?
  • Does the Post equate safe business decisions with cowardice?
  • Wait! That would explain why the Post’s circulation is lower than it was in the 1960s! It has all come together! Mystery solved!
  • LeBron is not an actual chicken.
