Erik Spoelstra has signed a two-year contract extension that will (in theory) keep the coach with the Miami Heat through the 2013-14 season, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. The deal will pay Spoelstra $3 million per year.

Windhorst notes that Spoelstra, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the 2011-12 season, is now under contract for the same amount of time as the Heat's three All-Stars, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Spoelstra, the NBA's first Asian-American head coach, has a career 148-98 record in three seasons with Miami. His teams have made the playoffs each season, largely thanks to Wade.
Spoelstra faced wide criticism a few times last season, but came through cleanly. James and Wade consistently expressed faith in Spoelstra’s abilities, refusing to give media pundits the rope they wanted.
The Heat will be heavy favorites to represent the East in the NBA Finals and win the championship. They lost 4-2 to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 Finals.
