O.J. Mayo Trade Missed Deadline, Grizzlies, Pacers Blaming Each Other

In one of the stranger NBA trade deadline stories in recent memory, a proposed trade that would have sent O.J. Mayo to the Indiana Pacers for Josh McRoberts and a first-round pick was agreed upon after the 3 p.m. deadline, making it null and void. Now, after the fact, both the Pacers and the Grizzlies are blaming each other, with conflicting reports coming out about what exactly happened.

Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star talked to a Pacers source who said it was the Grizzlies that backed out of the trade at the last minute.

No deal between Pacers and Grizzlies. Deal was in place, but Grizzlies pulled out at the last minute, according to a source.

The Grizzlies, meanwhile, say otherwise. Owner Michael Heisley told Chris Tomasson of Fanhouse that the Grizzlies wanted to add another big man into the deal and couldn’t make it happen before 3 p.m. He then turned around and all but blamed the incident on the Pacers, telling David Aldridge that “Indiana was not able to get it all together.”

Regardless, Mayo will stay in Memphis, and the Grizzlies only trade will be acquiring Shane Battier for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick.
