VIDEO: Chris Webber Offers Support To Keep Kings In Sacramento
With the Kings possibly playing their last game in Sacramento on Wednesday night, it seemed like the appropriate time for Chris Webber to weigh in. The former Kings' star was asked about the possibility of the Kings relocating to Anaheim on TNT's Inside the NBA, and pledged his full support to keep them in Sacramento.
I didn't want to go there [Sacramento]. I tried to run away from there. They still accepted me. I can't imagine what Sacramento would be like without basketball. I hope we do not lose the team. I've been talking to people there. I know everyone thinks the team is gone, but I'm doing all I can to keep the team there. I may sound like a fool on national TV, but I'm working to do that. Other people are working to do that.
Part of Webber’s pitch, he admitted, was selfish, in that he would never have a place for his jersey to hang from the rafters if the Kings moved to Anaheim. He also didn’t elaborate on his efforts on TV, except to half-jokingly ask Charles Barkley to pledge $15 million. (Barkley said he would pledge $10-15 million, though you can never tell how serious he is).
As it turns out, though, Webber has been putting his money where his mouth is. Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee reports that Webber is part of an effort working to “restructure” the city’s $77 million loan to the team, and that he’s tried to buy a share of the team in the past.
No matter what, this is a good sign for Kings fans, especially on the heels of a recent report that the Maloof brothers don’t think they have enough support to relocate around the league. Maybe this won’t be the last game in Sacramento after all.
