Manu Ginobili Injury Leaves Spurs Star ‘Doubtful’ For Game Vs. Grizzlies

Manu Ginobili suffered an elbow injury in the San Antonio Spurs' Wednesday night loss to the Phoenix Suns, and an MRI Thursday led to the team listing the the All-Star guard as doubtful for Game 1 against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. The Spurs were only playing for the best record overall on Wednesday, and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich is typically cautious about resting his players.

But Ginobili hyperextended his elbow and immediately left the game. The Spurs went on lose, giving the Chicago Bulls the NBA's top record and home court advantage in a potential NBA Finals matchup between the teams. In retrospect, it seems like a poor risk, but a similar injury could happen in practice.

Without Ginobili, Popovich could turn to either backup point guard George Hill or rookie Gary Neal in the starting lineup. Memphis starts Tony Allen, who isn't a huge scoring threat but a strong defender.
