Spurs Vs. Grizzlies: Was Game One Loss A Good Thing For San Antonio?

Zach Randolph led all scorers with 25 points and added 14 rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies earned their first-ever franchise playoff victory with a 101-98 decision over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Spurs blog Pounding The Rock has a theory. And that theory posits that the Spurs losing Game One to 8-seed Memphis was a good thing. I’ll let them explain.

Readers who are familiar with my New Odd-Numbered Year theory (which I unveiled in March to lukewarm response) may know where I'm headed with this, because I love a good pattern as much as love the Spurs. Teams, like people, have personalities, and regularly do things in a certain way. And since Manu Ginobili joined the Spurs in 2002-03, the post-season for every championship they've won has begun with a loss in Game One of their first playoff series.

Quite simply, when the Spurs lose the first game of the NBA Playoffs, they win titles. Case closed.

Read more about this intriguing theory at Pounding The Rock. If you’d rather go celebrate the win with Grizzlies’ fans, head on over to Straight Outta Vancouver.
