Doc Rivers, Boston Celtics Agree On Five-Year Contract Extension, According To Report

Coming into the 2010/11 season, there was a growing feeling that Doc Rivers was in his final year as the head coach of the Boston Celtics. That thought quickly evaporated in the days after the team's second-round NBA Playoffs loss to the Miami Heat. Now, it looks like Rivers will be the team's coach for the foreseeable future. Rivers has agreed to a five-year contract extension to remain behind the Celtics' bench, general manager Danny Ainge told Greg Dickerson of CSN New England.

Rivers had indicated his desire to take a step back after the season, but went back on that in the postgame press conference following Boston’s Game 5 loss on Wednesday. The Celtics began negotiating a contract extension immediately after that, and it looks like an agreement was reached quickly.

Rivers has been the Celtics' coach since 2004, and really improved his reputation by steering the Celtics to the title in 2008, getting three superstars to buy into the idea of sacrifice and facilitating the development of point guard Rajon Rondo into a star.
