Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv advanced to the continental championship game with a 82-63 win over Real Madrid in the Euroleague Final Four in Barcelona on Friday. Chuck Eidson, a University of South Carolina product, lead Maccabi with 19 points, and Sofo Schortsanitis, the hefty Greek center, added 16.
Maccabi Electra Flies Into Euroleague Final Four Championship Game With Win Over Real Madrid
Real Madrid was paced by brilliant Croat center Ante Tomic, who had 17 points and six rebounds. His NBA rights are controlled by the Utah Jazz, but the 7'2 titan apparently has no interest in leaving Europe. Center Felipe Reyes, a mainstay on Spain's national club, added 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Maccabi has five European titles, but none since 2005. Israel's top club has been home to some of Europe's very best players, including Sarunas Jasikevicius. Maccabi has also helped produce Omri Casspi -- the only Israeli to ever play in the NBA -- and Beno Udrih, and was the team Anthony Parker called home before returning to the United States.
Maccabi will play Greek club Panathinaikos in the championship game on Sunday, giving Sofo a chance to battle several of his national team buddies. Real will take on Montepaschi Siena in the third-place game.
