Kelvin Sampson To Be Named Kevin McHale’s Rockets Assistant, According To Repot

According to reports, former Milwaukee Bucks assistant Kelvin Sampson has been hired by the Houston Rockets to join new head coach Kevin McHale as the lead assistant on his staff. Over two months ago Sampson participated in 14-hour interview for the head coaching position that McHale eventually received, yet, as fate would have it, he soon landed right back in Houston.

The 55-year old made a name from himself coaching in the college ranks, achieving immense success at the University of Oklahoma and Indiana. However, in 2008 Sampson was forced to resign as head coach of the Hoosiers after infamously catching the attention of NCAA investigators over several severe recruiting violations.

Following his resignation, Sampson was immediately hired by the NBA's San Antonio Spurs to serve as a special advisor for the remainder of the 2008 season. He parlayed that work into an assistant coaching position under Scott Skiles' Milwaukee Bucks staff.

Former Timberwolves assistant J.B. Bickerstaff was also hired onto McHale's Houston staff. Bickerstaff has been a Minnesota assistant for each of the past four seasons, including a one year tenure during McHale's second stint as the Timberwolves' head coach.
