Tyson Chandler injury: Knicks big man says he’ll play in opener

New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler believes he will be ready to play in the team's season-opening game against the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN New York. Chandler has been dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee that was discovered in an MRI earlier this week. As ESPN New York pointed out, Chandler was injured in the second quarter of Wednesday's preseason game against the Nets, when he collided with Brooklyn's Gerald Wallace.

The Knicks are already dealing with an injury to Chandler’s frontcourt mate Amar’e Stoudemire. The forward is expected to miss at least two weeks with a knee issue.

Chandler is the NBA’s reigning defensive player of the year after after recording 1.4 blocks and 6.5 defensive rebounds per game in a lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. The 7’1 Chandler also helped out on the offensive end for the Knicks, chipping in 11.3 points per contest.

The Nets host the Knicks to start the season on Nov. 1 in the Barclays Center.
