Amar’e Stoudemire injury: Knicks star out 6 weeks, according to report

The Knicks will without their starting power forward until the middle of December.

New York Knicks star Amar’e Stoudemire will miss the first six weeks of the regular season with a knee injury, according to Chris Broussard of ESPN. Stoudemire was first expected to be out two to three weeks, but sought a second opinion on his injury last week. The forward had initially been diagnosed with a ruptured popliteal cyst in his knee after experiencing soreness. The initial prognosis was that Stoudemire would not require surgery.

The 11th-year veteran is entering his third season with New York after joining the team via free agency in 2010. He averaged 17.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in 47 games in 2011-12. The Knicks performed well when Stoudemire was out last season, but that was over a short stretch of time during Linsanity.

New York will get their season started on Thursday night with the now-intracity rival Nets at the newly opened Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
