The NBA and NBPA have pledged to donate $1 million to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. According to the NBA, that money will be used to support the Red Cross, New York Cares, Salvation Army, Jersey Cares and possibly other organizations working to provide relief to hurricane victims.

NBA commissioner David Stern had some comments about the disaster that were published on the NBA’s official website. Stern had the following to say about the league’s effort to support those affected by the storm:
“Many homes and lives were devastated by Hurricane Sandy and our thoughts, abiding concerns and hopes are with all those affected. The NBA, the NBPA, our teams, and players are partnering with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations to support the relief efforts to help families and communities recover.”
NBPA executive director Billy Hunter also had a statement on the NBA’s website about the $1 million donation:
“The immeasurable damage and heartbreaking impact of this latest natural disaster continues to shock all of us. The NBPA and its members will assist ongoing relief efforts by partnering with the Salvation Army along with other organizations as part of a long term commitment to help those in need.”
The NBA has seen its schedule altered by the disaster, with the Brooklyn Nets opener against the New York Knicks being postponed until later in November. Some early estimates have Sandy causing as much as $50 billion dollars in damages, with the number of people injured or killed in the storm still being tallied.
