John Wall injury: Wizards’ star admitted he had stress fracture

John Wall spent some time with the press on Monday, revealing concerning new details about his left knee injury.

Washington Wizards star point guard John Wall told the media on Monday that he had a stress fracture in his left knee, a new revelation. There's been a fair amount of mystery surrounding Wall's knee injury, and the point guard has not been available to the media much while spending the first 21 games in street clothes. But Wall told the press that the team was lucky to catch the injury when they did and promptly shut him down, as he had a stress fracture and was in the process of potentially breaking his kneecap. Here's a transcript from Amin Vafa at Bullets Forever:

Reporter: Is your injury -- I saw a report that said -- similar to Blake Griffin's?

Wall: He broke his kneecap. I think mine was just a stress fracture where I was in the beginning stages of breaking my kneecap. It was lucky I caught it before it broke, and I would already know what my timetable is: I would miss the whole season. And I had a little bit of cartilage problems. Underneath my kneecap it's kind of rough.

When Wall was first put on the shelf before the start of the season, Wizards coach Randy Wittman indicated that there was no fracture. Via Bullets Forever:

“We’re very lucky we took the precautionary steps to make sure nothing was there. We had thought bursitis or something like that, and we were lucky we came and saw it before it was any type of fracture. Those are the precautions we’re taking.”

Wall’s statement Monday contradicts that, and he seemed uncertain about when he would be fully rehabbed and ready to return. The note that there were also cartilage problems adds to the nebulous nature of the injury.

Wall was initially expected to miss eight weeks, but he told reporters that there is currently no timetable for his return. The issue was once characterized as discomfort in the knee, but Wall said he was in so much pain that he couldn’t even run on it. The session with the press only re-emphasized what now appears to be a major concern going forward, and Wall stated that he’s worried about “breaking my kneecap” if the return to game action is rushed.
