Rasheed Wallace To Sign With Los Angeles Lakers, According To Report

The Los Angeles Lakers have been looking to make a roster move for weeks. They are reportedly on the verge of signing Rasheed Wallace, which is not the move that many expected.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been experiencing a decidedly uneven 2011-12 NBA season. Struggling through games, off-court rumor rumblings and the friction caused by the combination of the two, the team has loudly been looking to make improvements to the team.

While rumors have been swirling for weeks about any number of potential Pau Gasol trades, it now appears that reinforcements may be arriving without having to send any players away. According to A. Sherrod Blakely at CSN New England, Rasheed Wallace is on the verge of signing with the Lakers. The move will be an easy one to make for the Lakers, who are already playing with less than a full roster.

With a roster of 14 players, the Lakers can add Wallace and not have to worry about waiving a player to make room.

His addition will likely fuel rumors that the Lakers will become even more aggressive in their decision to trade away Pau Gasol.

However, a front office executive whose team has had both internal and external discussions about Gasol, said the addition of Wallace will only be to strengthen their bench.

“His days as a starter in this league are gone,” said the source. “I think he knows that, and so do the Lakers. But think about it. Of the big men that are available, is there one that’s really better? And if he’s gotten himself in shape, adding him becomes a huge get for them.”

Wallace has not played in the NBA since the last game of the 2010 NBA Finals. He had two years remaining on his contract with the Boston Celtics entering 2011, but the club instead exercised their $1 million buyout option.
