The Denver Nuggets are fighting to stay in the playoff picture. As things stand, the Nuggets are seventh in the playoff standings in the Western Conference, but the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns are threatening to make the cut as well. On Thursday, the Nuggets received some bad news about a key contributor.

The Nuggets announced Thursday that shooting guard Rudy Fernandez will undergo back surgery. He had previously been listed as out indefinitely with a lower back strain. As a result of the surgery, Fernandez is likely to miss the remainder of the regular season.

As well as being a blow to the Nuggets as they work to secure a postseason berth, the injury could impact the Spanish national basketball team, for whom Fernandez also plays. Between the back injury to Fernandez and Ricky Rubio' season-ending ACL tear, Spain may enter this summer's Olympic Games down two starters.

In 2011-12, Fernandez is averaging 8.6 points per game in 22.9 minutes of nightly playing time for Denver.
