Amar’e Stoudemire Injury Update: Knicks Forward Hopes To Return For Playoffs, Offseason Surgery A Possibility

The New York Knicks have been keeping their playoff hopes alive despite a depleted bench and ailing starters. Amar'e Stoudemire is still out of action with a bulging disc in his lower back, but there is still a chance that the power forward could be back in time for the postseason.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports that Stoudemire will receive an epidural steroid injection that will be a temporary fix for the injury, allowing the player to return to action in the short term.

Wellington Hsu, an orthodepic surgeon and spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, said the injection will reduce inflammation around the nerve root -- not the bulging disk itself.

“Even temporary relief from such an injection is enough for the player to return to the court,” Hsu said.

A doctor in Miami offered a second opinion that this is an acceptable short-term solution for the problem, but the consensus medical opinion is that Stoudemire will need to undergo surgery in the offseason to prevent his back injury from becoming a recurring problem in the future.
