Pau Gasol Lakers Trade Could Be Imminent, According To Report

Pau Gasol has been at the center of trade rumors all season long in Los Angeles, but now it appears the Lakers could be ready to trade him for real. Roland Lazenby is a longtime journalist in Los Angeles with close ties to the Lakers organization, and this afternoon, he tweeted this:

It seems we’ll soon be getting news that Gasol has been traded. No details confirmed, but he’s apparently gone.

It’s pure rumor, and was presented as nothing more than that. Just to be sure, after the initial reaction from around the internet, Lazenby was quick to qualify:

Considering the Chris Paul fiasco, it’s good to remind that nothing is official. Only whispers, but it’s a whispering NBA world these days.

Right. The Lakers have been down this road before with Gasol, so it’s best to wait til the ink’s dry here. On the other hand, with the trade deadline a week away, we haven’t heard many Gasol rumors, and a trade today--or anytime before next week’s deadline--would be a surprise for NBA fans, and a serious shakeup for a Lakers team that’s been struggling of late.

On the other hand, Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that while Houston has been “aggressively pursuing” Gasol in trade talks, there’s no deal imminent. For now, it’s just a reminder that Dwight Howard isn’t the only elite big man who could be available this week. We’ll wait and see.
