Ernie Grunfeld will remain the general manager of the Washington Wizards, team owner Ted Leonsis confirmed in a blog post on Tuesday. Late Monday, the Washington Post’s Mike Wise reported that Grunfeld would sign a two-year extension.

Ernie Grunfeld will remain at the helm of the Washington Wizards.
In his blog post, Leonsis cites Grunfeld’s work to rebuild the club with youth and flexibility in mind.
“When we purchased the Wizards, I felt it was necessary to revamp and change the direction of the team; Ernie has led that charge and embraced our new philosophy,” Leonsis wrote. “We have accumulated talented, young players and worked at developing them. We have acquired veteran players who can help guide the younger players and just as importantly, help us win games. We have a roster right now that features six first-round picks from the last two drafts. Under Ernie’s leadership we have almost completely turned over the Wizards roster.”
The Wizards last made the playoffs in 2008. Since then, the Wizards have a record of 86-224 (.277). Only the Minnesota Timberwolves (82-229) have a worse winning percentage over that span. Grunfeld has run the Wizards’ basketball operations since 2003.
