Golden State Warriors Announce Intention To Move To San Francisco In 2017

The Golden State Warriors announced they will be moving to San Francisco in 2017 at a press conference Tuesday. The team unveiled plans to build a new privately financed arena at Piers 30-32.

The press conference, which included Jerry West and NBA commissioner David Stern, was held from the site of the future arena. San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee said the new arena will keep the Warriors in the Bay Area and provide a boost to the local economy.

The Warriors have been the Bay Area’s basketball team for 50 years, and today sets the stage for the Warriors to be the Bay Area’s team for another 50. This project will provide millions of dollars in new tax revenue for San Francisco over the long term for services local residents need, including public safety, parks, public transit, pothole repair, youth programs and senior services.

Warriors Co-Execuitve Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob outlined the plan for the privately financed project. Lacob said he wants the new arena to be the most spectacular in the country. The location, while limited in available parking, is very accessible to public transportation. In addition to Warriors games, the new facility will also be used for other purposes including concerts, conventions and other events.

The Warriors have played in Oakland’s Oracle Arena since 1972. They previously played in San Francisco from 1962-1971. The team’s current lease expires following the 2016-2017 NBA season.
