Scott Brooks, Thunder Can’t Agree On Contract Extension, According To Report

Will Scott Brooks be back as the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder?

Scott Brooks has rejected a three-year contract extension worth $11 million offered by the Oklahoma City Thunder, reports Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski, putting the 2009-10 NBA Coach of the Year's future in some doubt. The two sides stopped talking contract during the NBA playoffs, says Woj, but the uncertainty is still looming once the NBA Finals end.

Put another way, Brooks is quite possibly Oklahoma City’s most notable free agent.

Top head coaches typically earn at least $5 million per season, and some (like Doc Rivers) more than $7 million. The offered extension would put Brooks at less than $4 million per season, which would seem quite low if the Thunder can come back and win the title.

More concerning for Oklahoma City would be the lack of a clear replacement: Maurice Cheeks, a former head coach for the Blazers and Sixers, is the No. 2 coach on the bench, but he doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation for Xs and Os.

Brooks, for all his faults, would be quite popular if he left Oklahoma City at season's end. The Bobcats, Magic and Blazers all still have vacancies.
