Mike Fisher of Fox Sports Southwest and DallasBasketball.com reports that top executives from the Dallas Mavericks and Orlando Magic spoke about Dwight Howard last week, but that there's no deal to be had at this point. The Mavericks were figuring to bid for Howard had he reached free agency in July; alas, the All-NBA center waived his opt-out clause to stay with the Magic and prolong the Dwightmare.
Mavericks Talk To Magic About Dwight Howard, But There’s Nothing There
Fisher quotes Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson as saying that Dallas doesn't have the assets to beat offers that teams like the Houston Rockets, L.A. Lakers or even Brooklyn Nets can put on the table. (The Nets don't figure to be in the mix until Brook Lopez is eligible to be traded on Jan. 15.) But if Howard does get traded to a team he doesn't want to sign an extension with (such as the Rockets), Dallas would figure to chase him in July, when he'd be an unrestricted free agent.
