Rajon Rondo injury: Celtics fear guard might have torn ACL, per reports

Sources have told multiple reporters that the Boston Celtics are worried that Rajon Rondo’s knee could be an ACL tear.

The Boston Celtics sent guard Rajon Rondo to the hospital for an MRI on Sunday with a fear that he could have a torn ACL, according to the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy and Florida radio show host David Baumann.

Mike Petraglia of WEEI.com reported just before 2 p.m. ET that Celtics team doctors did not know the MRI results.

The injury was originally described as a hyperextended right knee that occurred in the Boston Celtics' loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday. Rondo played in 45 minutes of that double-overtime contest, and he was ruled out just before tip on Sunday as the Celtics hosted the Miami Heat.

Rondo is averaging 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game to go with his NBA-leading average of 11.1 assists. He was coming off one of the best stretches of his season and had recorded a triple-double in his final two games.

The Celtics replaced Rondo with Courtney Lee in the starting lineup, sliding regular shooting guard Avery Bradley into the point guard spot. Head coach Doc Rivers has the bodies to replace Rondo with Jason Terry and Leandro Barbosa coming off the bench, but Boston will be without it's primary ball handler and one of the best playmakers in the NBA for the time being.
