Glen Davis injury: Magic forward out 8-12 weeks

Big Baby is having a screw inserted in his foot, which may end up keeping him out of the rest of the season.

The best season of Glen Davis' NBA career has come to a premature end, with the Magic announcing that their starting PF would be out 8-12 weeks after breaking his foot in their loss to the Knicks on Wednesday.

Davis had thrived in the wake of Dwight Howard's departure, averaging 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists a game on 45/0/72 shooting. He was one of the keys to Orlando's surprisingly fast start to the season; their tail-spin over the last two months began with the shoulder injury he suffered in mid-December.

But while losing Davis will significantly affect their on-court product, it may end up being the best thing for the franchise in the long-term. Under the direction of new GM Rob Hennigan, a disciple of Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti, Orlando has been planning on rebuilding through the draft, which necessitates the type of losing seasons that give a team multiple Top 5 picks.

At the same time, losing Davis will allow the Magic to give more opportunities to Nikola Vucevic and Andrew Nicholson, their two promising young big men who will be key players in any rebuilding movement.
