Trey Burke injury: Jazz rookie out 8-12 weeks with fractured finger

Trey Burke, the rookie point guard and first-round draft pick of the Jazz, will undergo surgery Tuesday.

Utah Jazz rookie Trey Burke will miss 8-12 weeks because of a broken index finger that will require surgery, reports The Deseret News' Jody Genessy. Burke's agent told the paper the point guard will undergo surgery on Tuesday that will insert pins into his finger to help the healing process.

The rookie out of Michigan broke his finger on Saturday in a preseason loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The team first expected him to miss only three weeks.

The new timeline pushes Burke’s first NBA game back from mid-December to the first week in January, which comes down to 20 to more than 30 games.

In the interim, Utah will move forward with backup point guard John Lucas III, an NBA journeyman, as the starter. The team doesn't have much depth behind him with Scott Machado and Lester Hudson having non-guaranteed contracts. The team could also use undersized shooting guard Ian Clark, a rookie out of Belmont, at the point guard spot.

The Deseret News reports the Jazz will look at potential free agent options to help the point guard depth.
