Warriors, Andrew Bogut open negotiations on contract extension

Bogut is slated to earn $14.2 million in the final year of his contract with Golden State. The Warriors would like to lock up Bogut to a three-year extension before he hits free agency next offseason, and the big man said the team began a dialogue with his agent last week.

Bogut was pretty revealing in his talk with Howard-Cooper, saying the initial numbers offered from the Warriors “weren’t insulting,” but it wasn’t exactly what he was looking for. However, the insinuation is that the two sides aren’t far apart.

Bogut has had some injury issues over the course of his career, and he’s willing to make some concessions in order to stay with Golden State. Those concessions would come in the form of incentive clauses based on games played.

Just how valuable is Bogut to Golden State? The numbers from last postseason are pretty telling. While much of the focus was rightfully put on Stephen Curry’s insane shooting, Bogut’s defense was also key in the Warriors’ success. When Bogut was on the court last postseason, the Warriors gave up just 99.9 points per 100 possessions, per NBA.com. When he was on the bench, that number rose to an atrocious 107.7 points per 100 possessions.

Bogut said he really hasn’t considered playing anywhere else as of yet, but he admitted that several other teams have already expressed an interest in signing him if he becomes a free agent. The 29-year-old wouldn’t say which teams, although he hinted it was “a couple teams in the West.”
