Greg Oden misses Heat practice with swelling in knee

The former No. 1 overall pick is back to being limited in practice with the Miami Heat.

Greg Oden's comeback attempt hit a slight road block Wednesday as the 7' big man was held out of practice after he endured swelling in his left night, according to a report.

This comes just two days after he participated in his first 5-on-5 practice with the Miami Heat. The former Ohio State Buckeye last appeared in an NBA game on Dec. 5, 2009, with the Portland Trailblazers.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports that Oden and the Heat have “been very careful to avoid setting a timetable” because they are “preparing for setbacks.”

“This has been three years for me, as long as it’s no surgery, it’s OK,” said Oden, who last played in an NBA game in 2009. “This is going to be a long season, I’m going to get there.”

Oden was selected No. 1 overall in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Portland Trailblazers after averaging 15.7 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocks on 61.6 percent shooting from the floor in his lone season at Ohio State.

He’s proven to be a serviceable, if not very good, big man when healthy. His career per-36 numbers -- 15.3 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.3 blocks -- paint the picture of an excellent center. The problem? He can’t stay healthy enough to play 36 minutes.

Miami isn’t expecting Oden to play 30+ minutes a night, but the hope is that he can stay healthy enough to resurrect his NBA career.
