NBA close to deals allowing live streaming of local broadcasts, according to report

The new deals will cover 24 of the league’s 30 teams, with more deals expected to come later in the year to cover the other six teams.

USA TODAY Sports

The NBA is finalizing TV Everywhere deals with Fox Sports Media Group and NBC Sports Group that will allow local broadcasts to be streamed online, according to John Ourand and John Lombardo of the Sports Business Journal. The NBA will become the first major sports league in the United States to offer such services when the deals are completed.

These new deals will cover 24 of the league's 30 teams. Fox has deals with 16 NBA teams, while Comcast has eight. Other regional sports networks like MSG (Knicks), YES (Nets), Time Warner Cable Sports (Clippers and Lakers), Altitude Sports and Entertainment (Nuggets) and Root Sports (Jazz) are expected to offer streaming services later this season.

The deals will allow people who subscribe to a distributor that carries Fox Sports Net and Comcast SportsNet to watch their local teams’ games on broadband or mobile. There will be no streaming on NBA.com or any of the team websites, but teams will be allowed to promote and link to where the games are being streamed, whether that be the regional sports network’s page or the Fox Sports Go app.

The deals will run through the 2015-16 season, which is when the NBA’s television deals expire.
