Timberwolves to pick up Derrick Williams’ option, says owner

Minnesota to pay Williams $6.3 million in 2014-2015.

Marilyn Indahl-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Timberwolves will indeed pick up the fourth-year option on forward Derrick Williams, as confirmed by owner Glen Taylor to 1500ESPN.com's Darren Wolfson.

While it is rare that this would even be a question for a No. 2 overall pick, Williams’ case is an unusual one, as covered by SBNation’s Mark Deeks earlier this month. Williams has been inconsistent over his first two years in the league, with questions surrounding which forward spot would suit him best. His uneven performance, questionable fit in head coach Rick Adelman’s system and the team’s proximity to the luxury tax threshold put him in jeopardy.

With Kevin Love occupying the power forward spot and the jury out on the slimmed down Williams’ small forward experiment this year, this move doesn’t mean it’s certain that Williams will remain with the Timberwolves long-term. It just ensures that Minnesota won’t lose him for nothing next summer.
