Amar’e Stoudemire on track to play in Knicks’ season opener

Stoudemire said he felt great after he scrimmaged for the first time all training camp.

New York Knicks big man Amar'e Stoudemire is on track to play in the Knicks' season opener after successfully participating in his first scrimmage of training camp, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

New York opens their regular season Oct. 30 against the Milwaukee Bucks, and there have been plenty of questions about whether Stoudemire would be ready to go as he rehabs from yet another knee surgery in July.

However, Stoudemire said things went really well Tuesday, which is a huge plus for his chances to play in the opener:

“It went great,” Stoudemire said. “I finished the scrimmage strong. My legs felt stronger as they’ve never been before. No discomfort at all. No pain at all. Great, great sign.”

Whenever Stoudemire returns to the lineup, the Knicks plan on being extra cautious with him. Not only will the big man be on a minutes limit of about 20-25 minutes, but he also won’t play in both ends of back-to-backs. New York has 18 back-to-backs this season.

J.R. Smith also scrimmaged Tuesday for the first time all training camp. Smith was finally cleared to scrimmage after his offseason knee surgery, and the Knicks hope he'll be able to play in their preseason finale on Friday.
