The San Antonio Spurs made a semi-shocking personnel move Friday when they signed injury-nagged veteran Josh Howard to a non-guaranteed contract.

San Antonio -- in looking for a full time veteran backup to emerging star Kawhi Leonard -- signed Howard in the hopes that he can remain healthy enough to provide serviceable minutes off the bench. On Saturday, the team waived Howard just one day after signing him.
What would they do that for? Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News reports that under NBA rules the Spurs can assign preseason roster players to D-League stints provided they agree to a D-League contract. In other words, Howard will still get his shot. This time, however, it’ll be an hour-and-a-half north in Austin, Tx., the D-League club of San Antonio’s choice.
Howard, who hasn’t been the same player since tearing an ACL in his left knee in February of 2010, is reportedly 100-percent healthy and looking to get back in condition.
The Spurs waiving Howard gives the team the option to send him to the D-League where he can work on his conditioning until he’s able to play full-time in the NBA.
The beauty here is that the Spurs won’t have to spend much money to find out if Howard can condition his body and regain at least some of his old form.
