Rarely does an NBA team have to deal with the resignation of a newly signed general manager on the eve of its opening night game, but the Dallas Mavericks are dealing with that exact strange scenario as the team prepares for the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. Reports from ESPN indicate the departure of Gersson Rosas came as a result of a role dispute between he and Mavs brass just three months after his hiring.
Why did Gersson Rosas leave the Dallas Mavericks?
The newly hired general manager has departed after only three months on the job.

The former member of the Houston Rockets front office was brought on in a supplementary role to work alongside president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, but concerns about the fit reportedly surfaced immediately following his hiring.
This from Rosas:
“I made the personal decision to resign as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks after determining that the position was not the best fit for me at this point in my career. The decision was made solely by me, as I firmly believe this change is in my best interest. Mark Cuban asked me to reconsider my decision, but graciously accepted my decision and we part as friends. I would like to thank Mark and the Dallas Mavericks for the opportunity.”
Rosas came from the statistically driven Rockets organization as someone who could offer a fresh perspective and new ideas for Dallas, and the idea behind his hiring was to provide a boost for the Mavericks’ pro and college scouting efforts. But the new GM reportedly wanted more overall control of day-to-day operations.

It begs the question: Why weren’t these issues ironed out prior to Rosas’ signing? It seems this would be an important discussion to have ahead of time, but for whatever reason it appears there was a misunderstanding.
At this point it is unclear whether Dallas plans on making any immediate follow-up moves.
