C.J. McCollum injury: Broken foot will require surgery for Blazers rookie

The Lehigh product refractured a bone he’d injured in college last season. He is out indefinitely.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

C.J. McCollum, the Portland Trail Blazers' 2013 lottery pick, is out indefinitely after breaking a bone in his foot during training camp, the team announced on Saturday. McCollum fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot, which is the bone on the outside of the foot connecting the pinkie toe to the heel structure.

What’s concerning is that a fracture to the same bone caused McCollum to miss the final three months of his college career. He was diagnosed with a fractured fifth metatarsal in January 2013, ending his season for Lehigh. He began training at full speed in mid-April, three months after surgery. That history will likely lead the Blazers to proceed with caution during McCollum’s recovery. No timetable has been set.

Portland is pushing for the playoffs this season, but the team's depth at point guard is strong with reigning Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard and veterans Mo Williams and Earl Watson in place. The Blazers had one of the worst benches in the NBA last season, and McCollum is expected to boost its status.
