Kyrie Irving injury: Cavaliers guard will wear protective mask for 2 weeks

The Cavs young star caught an elbow Wednesday night against the Timberwolves

Kyrie Irving is no stranger to masks. He wore a black mask last season that protected a broken bone in his face. He wears a mask of makeup while schooling fools on playgrounds around the city under the pseudonym "Uncle Drew."

For the next two weeks, he will wear a protective mask for two weeks after breaking his nose during the first quarter against the Timberwolves on Wednesday, according to Jodie Valade of Cleveland.com.

On Friday, Irving wore the mask in a 86-80 loss against the Bobcats. Irving told Cleveland.com that his nose "hurt pretty bad," and that he understood the challenges of wearing the mask on the court.

“Your peripheral vision kind of gets taken out,” Irving said. “It’s an adjustment I have to get used to, once again.”

Irving looked comfortable in his mask the last time he was forced to wear it. On Dec.15, 2012, he torched the Knicks for 41 points in Madison Square Garden while rocking a black mask. Irving was dazzling in that performance, knocking down five shots from deep and 15-of-25 from the floor.

This season has been a bit of setback for the third-year player. His assists have jumped up from 5.9 to 6.9 per game but he’s scoring two less points and his field goal percentage has dipped from 45 to 39 percent.

Irving is still looking to get on track this season. Maybe the mask is all he needs.
