An unsurprisingly tight game throughout, neither team led by more than three points during the final six minutes of regulation. The Knicks appeared to be putting the game away with time running out before Iman Shumpert fouled George on a three-point attempt seconds before the buzzer. George hit all three shots from the charity stripe to tie the game and force overtime.
Once there, George simply took over the game. For those wondering whether the Pacers’ wing is ready to take the leap as an offensive focal point, plays like this signal the affirmative:
Indiana’s started cold, scoring just 14 points in the first quarter and 37 points by halftime. Overall, the Pacers shot 38 percent from the field and 9-of-30 from three-point range, but it hardly mattered late as George carried the offense late. He finished with 35 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists in a starring effort.
Carmelo Anthony led New York with 30 points and 18 rebounds, but the team’s surprising 52-49 advantage on the boards wasn’t enough. Part of that may be explained by free throw attempts, as Indiana took 19 more shots from the charity stripe than New York.
With the loss, New York drops to 1-6 at Madison Square Garden this season.
