The New York Knicks had discussions with the Houston Rockets and a third team about a possible deal sending Rockets center Omer Asik to the Knicks, but the trade is unlikely to happen, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

The Knicks have tried to get in on the Asik trade talks, but they’re unlikely to land the big man.

Five teams are reportedly in the mix for Asik, including the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and one "wildcard" team. That wildcard team could be the Knicks, who are dangerously thin up front thanks to injury problems. Tyson Chandler is set to return from a leg injury, but Kenyon Martin is dealing with an abdominal strain and Amar'e Stoudemire is having knee issues yet again.

The Knicks are willing to trade Iman Shumpert and Metta World Peace, although more salary would have to go out in order to take on Asik's $8.37 million cap hit. Sending out the injured Raymond Felton as well would at least make the math work.
Even if a deal with the Knicks somehow went down, it would create an interesting dynamic between Asik and the returning Chandler. Asik wants to start and has expressed unhappiness as a backup, but it seems unlikely the Turkish big man would start over Chandler. And much like in Houston with Dwight Howard, playing Asik and Chandler together wouldn't be a good option.
