NBA trade rumors: Omer Asik to Celtics ‘gaining traction,’ according to report

The Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics are reportedly getting deeper into discussions revolving around center Omer Asik and which players would come to Houston in return.

The Boston Celtics have discussed Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee and a first-round pick being involved in a proposed exchange for Rockets center Omer Asik, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. It's not known whether Lee would join Houston or be sent to a third team in such a trade, adds Wojnarowski, but it appears that a trade sending Asik to Boston is "gaining traction."

Sources told the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett that the Celtics are listening but not exactly pursuing the trade that could be done by the Rockets’ reported self-imposed Thursday deadline. CBS Sports’ Ken Berger adds that any deal will probably be delayed until Thursday as the separate sides posture.

After all, Houston reportedly had another trade in place days ago but was hoping to weigh all options, reported Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. It seems the Rockets have created a bidding war both by taking their time and setting a deadline for any team that has interest in Asik, who this year has struggled to mesh with fellow Rockets center Dwight Howard.

For the Celtics specifically, a third team would likely be needed to secure a trade for Asik. Both ESPN’s Marc Stein and Bulpett reported on Wednesday that Boston had joined the Philadelphia 76ers as frontrunners to land Asik.
