Kelly Olynyk injury: Celtics rookie ruled out against Knicks with ankle injury

Olynyk will miss his eighth straight game when his teammates take on the Knicks Sunday.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

Boston Celtics rookie Kelly Olynyk will miss his eighth straight game with a sprained ankle Sunday when the Celtics and Knicks meet at Madison Square Garden, according to the Celtics.

Olynyk is averaging 7.5 points and 5.4 rebounds on 39 percent shooting in his first season in the NBA. He figures to be a key cog in Boston’s rebuilding plan, so taking the long view with the big man is the safe move.

There’s no word yet if Olynyk will be available during Boston’s game Tuesday against Brooklyn.

Boston has won five of its last seven games and, at 9-12, sits atop the woeful Atlantic Division. New York, the bottom-dweller of the division, as won two decisive games in a row after dropping its previous nine attempts.
