Charlie Villanueva says he’ll pick up 2013-14 Pistons option

Charlie Villanueva thinks the decision on his player option is “obvious” this offseason.

USA TODAY Sports

Charlie Villanueva will likely remain with the Detroit Pistons next season as he insinuated that he will pick up his $8.5 million player option this summer, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.

When asked about what he was planning on doing, Villanueva rhetorically asked Ellis: “Would you let that money go?”

Villanueva signed a five-year, $35 million deal in the summer of 2009 but has failed to live up to expectations with the Pistons. Villanueva is averaging 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a game while shooting 40.3 percent from the field, including 37.8 percent from three this season. That is a huge improvement compared to his disappointing numbers in 2011-12

Even if Villanueva picks up his option, the Pistons still have over $25 million in cap space this offseason, which should make them active players in free agency.

The Pistons are 22-35 so far this season and in 11th place in the Eastern Conference standings.
